Two key concepts emanate from the topic of our discourse, namely: nation and nationbuilding. The concept of ‘nation’ and the process of building one is very dynamic and complex, such that it does not lend itself to easy definition in precise terms. Scholars have thus viewed it from different angles. The Advanced Learners’ Dictionary, for example, defines a nation as “a large community of people usually speaking a single language, and usually having a political character or political aspiration”. This definition is inadequate as far as Nigeria and several other African nations are concerned. Taking the case of a common language, which is emphasised by the dictionary, for instance, Nigeria at present has no common language that is widely spoken. Even the English language is not so common because majority of the citizens are unable to speak it.
