African Journal for Security and Development VOLUME 2 NUMBER 3 DECEMBER 2018

National security has been widely defined within the context of the protection of the values, critical human and infrastructural assets, territorial integrity, and lives and property of citizens from internal and external threats. The principles underlying national security could be situated within a number of theoretical frameworks, while the practice,in modern times is governed by three strategic elements – people, technology, and systems. In evaluating Nigeria’s national security, therefore, it is my submission that any national security architecture that is not in sync with global best practices and that is not sensitive to national dynamics will remain unfit for purpose, challenged, and of limited prospects in safeguarding our national interests and values.
