This book is the result of an interdisciplinary collaboration. The criticalissues addressed centre on the challenges of governance in contemporaryNigeria. They include such critical issues as leadership, nation building, ethnic nationalism, ethnic militia, youth disillusionment and national security. However, underpinning all these issues is the question of the place of cultural values in contemporary governance in Nigeria. Themotivation for this study is the need to interrogate the growing ethnicnationalism among the diverse ethnic nationalities in Nigeria in recent years and the attendant general disillusionment displayed by the youths across the country. The rising trend of ethnic nationalism is a serious challenge to contemporary governance in Nigeria. The manifestations include the frequency and tempo of violence and other threats to national security such as insurgency and terrorism in the north east, agitation for self-determination or separatism in the south east and the ever present threats of militancy in the Niger Delta. The cases of kidnapping, armed banditry, cattle rustling, armed herdsmen, ethno-religious and vandalism have continued unabated. Underpinning the enquiry into all thesecomplex issues is the question of the place of cultural values in contemporary governance in Nigeria.
