The presidential system while providing for a strong executive is structured to contain political excesses and abuses of power, and to protect the liberty and freedom of citizens through the system of separation of powers and checks and balances. It has been a preferred system in Nigeria because among others, it promotes dispersal of power; unity, energy and dispatch within the executive; stability in fixed tenures; national unity and speedy development,while being averse to institutionalised opposition. It is predicated on a legislative-executive relation that is driven by autonomy, interdependence,power sharing and mutual actions, while seeking good governance,democratic consolidation and socio-economic progress.Yet, legislative-executive relations which for the most part may be cordial and cooperative, could sometimes be so hostile and conflictive that it generates stalemates in government and tensions in the polity.
